Unit 2 Wrap up

Where should I start with this unit, being a part of social media crazed generation, I thought I knew all about most of the platforms that exist today. For starters it was cool learning about how we are all different on various social media platforms. Which, we ventured further more, actually choosing several of the platforms that we talked about. We chose our own groups (right like civil college student haha) and picked YouTube.

My group chose YouTube, because we thought it would be cool to actually use the platform to give the presentation. Honestly, I learned so much about YouTube during the time of researching different statistics. This platform has come such a long way from when it came out. As I shared the link above, we did a voice over talking about each statistic, which worked well when presented because we let our project speak for us. Just in case anyone had questions after, we could still answer them as well. Our photo for the video was hilarious to do, as we were making fun of videos that try to click bait people. Which, this is very popular on YouTube to do as, they try to use an image of a person with a shocked expression on their face and some cool looking object. We did just that and it was a great intro opener when presented too.

One thing that I liked about doing the project was learning about the statistics like, how many people from different countries watch YouTube. Also, researching about various age groups using YouTube was cool to figure out as I never really noticed this set of data before. Trust me watch the video and you'll learn things, you thought you knew about, just like me. 

While we chose our topics, we did separate projects that dealt with the same platforms, but used it telling stories using technology.  Before officially working on this project, we checked out various works that dealt with using a platform to tell a story or send a message. One that pointed out to me was called "blackness for sale" by Keith Obadike. He used the platform eBay to figuratively and literally sell his "blackness".

I think this was a clear statement about how African Americans are viewed in america. Most think that being black is on the outside, which is why he seems to be selling as if it's an object. Like for instance, he says that this blackness can be used to create black art. This seems like a subliminal message to the art world, that if it is black art its separate from the art world.

Another that pointed out to me was, when he includes that the blackness is used to create fear or instill fear, which is another stereotype that America has created. Even today we still have problems with African Americans being judged just because they are falsely accused by others.

Overall, this was a interesting piece and it had so many points that dealt with problems that we still face in America today. Also, I hope people really didn't try to actually buy his blackness because I'm seeing a couple bids on it. If it is real then I wouldn't be shocked, it reminded me how selling his blackness relates to how African Americans were auctioned off during slavery. As I said before, this has so many messages in it that I could write a book on why this piece is so important.

On the other hand, after finishing the social media group project, we had our own projects to work on. I chose google maps for my project, which dealt with the same topic I did before, anime. My plan was to choose various anime and try to find where their creator was from. As expected most of the anime I love, the creators lived in Japan, so I titled it "The "Nani" heard throughout Japan (If you don't know, "Nani" means "what" in Japanese).

I researched and used where the creators were from to make it easier to use an actual place. I did this because my story is about a character who is a big fan of anime and one day he is chosen to save several of his favorite anime's worlds. In this case, each creator of the world has gone bad and they are threatening to ruin the world that was once precious to them.

For each location, I included an image for each and a song to really make it more immersive/interactive when reading the action scenes. I inhabited that from watching anime, whenever the action scene came, music was in the background intensifying the moment. The world of anime is so cool and amazing. Here is just a sneak peak of my project that is in the works.

This project is still in the works, but great things are yet to come, I can't wait to learn more new things in this next unit.

Unit 1 wrap-up

After creating the memes, it was cool to really jump into to looking deeply into social media platforms. As we observed ones like Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, we were each assigned a group to find different analytics. I was assigned youtube along with my group members.


We then talked about each person being assigned a task which will go towards our overall theme, which is how to utilize youtube. As I continue to do more and more research it'll be cool to not  only learn the new things I am discovering, I am also excited to see what my group mates have discovered as well. It's like when you began to research something you thought you knew, the statistical parts of it I'm sure will make me see it in a whole new light.

We each assigned ourselves different roles to breakdown the true analytics of youtube. So far we plan to make a video voice over as our platform. So basically it would be a literal youtube video. We also are going to find a cool image to use as "clickbait". Honestly I am excited to look deep into youtube and understand why I myself was such a huge fan of it as well.

This unit has taught me so much regarding the use of social media platforms and the ranking system called a lisicle. I knew what the layout of a listcle was as we are all familiar with specific things being ranked, I never knew there was a technical term for it. And to finally be able to create one of my own, was awesome. I got to not only talk about anime, but to choose a favorite topic to rank certain items of my choosing.

The topic which I chose was ranking the top best 7 anime season 1 sequences   Listcle.pdf  (yes that is the title), which was super cool to do. Anime openings are something that I watch daily as an advent anime watcher, but seeing them in that light made me look at them completely different. Going back watching the openings made me point out things that I haven't seen before and I have more respect for the animators.

I also, began to see the colors in a whole new way and how they really capture the eye. Now after every anime I watch I will be looking out for elements that make cool openings.

Getting To know Meme:

The meme above showcase how people who read manga's always know everything ahead of people who watch the anime. Every time when someone who is watching an impactful moment in an anime it could ruined by someone who reads the manga. Honestly it's funny because some people who read mangas feel entitled to ruin everything.


This week we discussed the history and definition of memes. This was a cool discussion because I heard some cool ideas. Like how people can use memes to express something or show a sense of satire.  We generated positive and negative impacts that memes can have. I was definitely in the middle with both impacts.
